In recent days, some GOP candidates have removed the gloves and come out swinging, while at least one candidate has lost some of his confidence. Here's a look at what some notable figures have said in the last couple days:
* Mitt Romney had predicted at a rally on Monday that he would win the Iowa caucus. Tuesday, Romney backed away from his previous self-confidence: "It's hard to predict exactly what's going to happen. I think I'll be among the top group." - Mitt Romney to MSNBC television when asked about the Iowa Caucus
* Leading up to the Iowa caucus, Gingrich and Romney began name-calling. "This is a man whose staff created the PAC, his millionaire friends fund the PAC, he pretends he has nothing to do with the PAC. It's baloney. He's not telling the American people the truth." -- Newt Gingrich speaking of Romney on CBS' "The Early Show"
* In response, Romney popped back against Gingrich: "If you can't stand the heat of this little kitchen, wait for the hell's kitchen that's coming from Barack Obama." -- Romney responding to Newt Gingrich calling him a "liar" about PAC money on Fox News.
It is no surprise that the GOP candidates would remove the gloves and begin to sling mud since the Iowa caucus is closely watched and helps shape the GOP race for the White House.
* Some, however, do not feel Iowa is as important: "All I can tell you is we are going to exceed market expectations. Give it about 24 hours and the bright light will be on New Hampshire and the results of the Iowa caucuses will be forgotten." -- Jon Huntsman speaking in Pembroke, N.H.
Some sum up what the rest of us feel about the 2012 presidential race - - can we combine what we like about all of them into one great candidate?
* "I'm paying great attention, I just can't decide. There's bits and pieces of each candidate that I like and bits and pieces that I don't." -- Judy Peters, owner of an events center where roughly 1,000 voters in the Iowa caucus are meeting.
* While some candidates are trying to say what they will do in Washington, Rick Perry is boasting of his intent to do nothing: "If you give me the great privilege to serve you in Washington, D.C., I will get up every day and go to that Oval Office trying to make Washington D.C. as inconsequential in your life as I can." Rick Perry in a speech at Point of Grace Church in Waukee, Iowa.
* From Twitter, Mark Murray weighs in on what types of voters will lean toward certain candidates. "Paul benefits from younger voters and indies; Romney benefits from electability and the economy; and Santorum benefits from evangelicals" - Mark Murray @mmurraypolitics
* What does the Iowa caucus mean? It really depends on whom you listen to and believe. "Stand up America. Stand up Iowa. Reclaim our country. Tonight we begin the process of taking it back." -- Michelle Bachman speaking to a group at the UNI-Dome Tuesday.
* "But it's the beginning. This is a vetting process." - South Carolina GOP First Chairman Lin Bennett speaking of the Iowa caucus.
* "Iowa serves to begin funneling the field down. Recent history, republican nominees have not won Iowa. "So it's not a given. One of the things you want to be is in the top two." -- Major Scott Buchanan, a political science professor at the Citadel, speaking of the Iowa caucus in relation to the South Carolina caucus.
